NextGen-Louisville: Food Literature & What’s the Story? (Louisville, KY)

Food, Wellness, and Community Health

Since 2010, Fern Creek High School in Louisville’s Jefferson County Public School (JCPS) system has continued to evolve and emerge as a hub for student-centered and community-based initiatives. The Food Lit. program, started by Mr. Brent Peters, engages over 100 students a year in an interdisciplinary sophomore English course that encourages interaction and dialogue far beyond the walls of a typical classroom setting. And beginning in the fall of 2016, What’s the Story? Louisville launched at Fern Creek. It’s modeled after Vermont’s flagship program and challenges students and teachers from across multiple JCPS schools to become advocates for positive change after delving into community health and wellness-related issues. Middlebury College’s Bread Loaf School of English and Teacher Network catalyzed the creation of both of these projects, and Fern Creek’s administration hopes to continue hosting paradigm-busting projects.
